ANSI A92 committee approves development of three new standards

19 March 2012

The ANSI A92 main committee has approved the development of three new US standards: A92.20 Design, A92.22 Safe Use and A92.24 Training. The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) is represented on the new standards committees. These standards are intended to replace A92.3, A92.5, A92.6, A92.7 and A92.8.

The intent is to develop standards by topic instead of by product. This approach should bring about consistency and standardization when addressing aerial work platform (AWP) equipment, IPAF said.

The new ANSI standards are being based on ISO standards while also includin standards and responsibilities that are not addressed in the ISO standards.

The A92 main committee has also approved the sub-committees A92.20, A92.22 and A92.24. Tony Groat, IPAF USA and AWPT executive vice-president, is a committee member on each of these new sub-committees. He will work with the chairmen of the A92.22 and A92.24 committees to assist with administration. There are several individuals who are also on two or all three of these committees. This overlap will help reinforce the consistency between the new standards and continuity of language.

IPAF continues to be on the ANSI committees A92.3, A92.5 and A92.6:

  • A92.3 Manually Propelled Elevating Work Platforms
  • A92.5 Boom-Supported Elevating Work Platforms
  • A92.6 Self-Propelled Elevating Work Platforms

"This is part of IPAF's ongoing work in monitoring regulations and developments. The Federation is also represented on other standards committees around the world, e.g. EN 280, ISO, national standards committees in the UK, Singapore and Spain," IPAF said.
