US based company, Mastclimbers LLC, a sales and service company for new and used mast climbing work platforms, has reduced its insurance premiums by over 40% by implementing the AWPT (American Work Platform Training) training program. AWPT is a fully-owned subsidiary of IPAF (the International Powered Access Federation).

According to Bobby Reese and Mike Pitt of Mastclimbers LLC, the AWPT training program which they have adopted and implemented throughout their company allowed Hays Companies, an insurance broker specialising in programmes for high reach dealers, sales and services companies and manufacturers, to provide them with a policy that was over 40% lower than the premiums they had previously paid. Hays Companies is a member of IPAF and offers advantageous rates to IPAF members.

According to William Holler, senior vice president of Hays Companies with over 25 years experience in the access industry, "Properly trained users of access equipment can reduce risk and minimise the probability of accidents, injuries and losses. The confidence we have in the effectiveness of the AWPT training program in reducing accidents allows us to offer a significant discount off the insurance premiums for all companies insured through our special program.

"To qualify for the discount, companies must require employees who operate or occupy an aerial work platform/mast climbing work platform to successfully complete an AWPT training program."

Mike Pitt explained the Mastclimbers, LLC approach: "For us, the math was easy...our 100% AWPT trained workforce equals 40% reduction in premiums. Everyone sleeps soundly at night, even our accountant."
