Houston, US-based Century Elevators was contracted by BASF to provide a construction hoist for a 92 m steam cracker tower at the Port Arthur oil refinery in Texas.

The company chose German construction hoist manufacturer Geda to provide a PH 3240 650 Twin hoist to supply access to all six landings on the tower.

Used to carry out essential maintenance work, the PH 3240 650's hoist speed is 65 m/min with a maximum lifting height of 400 m. It can transport up to 30 people or an overall material weight of 3200kg in its 1.55 x 4 m platform.

A PH double car is used on the BASF steam cracker. This means that two cars – one on the left and one on the right side of the mast – can travel upwards and downwards independently of each other.

Although most of the maintenance work is to be completed before the start of the hurricane season, as the Gulf of Mexico is one of the world's most hurricane-affected regions. However, the scaffolding and mast have been designed to resist hurricane-strength wind gusts. The PH 3240 650 Twin is also equipped with a custom wind gauge.
