Haki And Sgb Under One Roof

Premium Content

20 March 2008

The 35 by 60 m temporary roof stands 35 m off the ground and has a free span of 28 m. It protects the historic, 1840's structure, gutted by fire in 2005 and undergoing restoration by contractor Austin Newport in Birmingham.

In collaboration with Haki UK in Tamworth, SGB designed and then built in 12 weeks the entire assembly, which will have completely cocooned the building for about two years upon completion of the project in 2008. The structure is secured at the ground in concrete, stands totally unsupported by the building, and has already withstood

185 kmph winds at roof level. SGB's regional director John Beeston told SI that the company I

chose the Haki roof for two reasons: the ease with which its panels can be opened for access, and safety. The roof was assembled and pushed out from one end, making it unnecessary for workers to hang from spanning members during its construction.
