IRN100 survey: US drives growth in global equipment rental

Premium Content

Revenues at the world’s largest 100 equipment rental businesses grew by an average of 6.6% in 2025, with the top five businesses – dominated by the large US players – expanding by more than 12% year-on-year.

The IRN100 survey – just published in the June issue of Rental & Access International magazine – reveals that acquisitions as well as organic growth in the USA continue to drive the expansion of the global rental market at above-GDP rates.

The fastest-growing companies are in the US, and the top five positions are occupied by US-based companies or, in the case of Aggreko at number five, one with 40% of its revenues generated there.

US rental is benefiting not just from a higher economic growth rate than most of the rest of the world, but also from a healthy stack of mega projects that are playing to the strengths of the big national and regional players.

The top 100 generated revenues of €82.8 billion and the top five €33.5 billion, or 40% of the total.

The growth rates cited above are in local currencies, so reflect growth excluding the impact of changes in exchange rates between 2024 and 2025, with the euro appreciating significantly against most major global currencies.

United & Sunbelt top again

United Rentals and Sunbelt Rentals occupy the top two slots, as expected, but third place is now EquipmentShare.

There are seven new entrants to the list, and four of them are from the US – Bigge Crane, Fabick Cat, Energy Rental Solutions (a Caterpillar business) and Opifex-Synergy.

The others are The Workdry Group (the pump rental specialist that owns Selwood and Holland Pump), Malaysia’s Sime Group (parent of Caterpillar dealer Hastings Deering and Australian company Onsite Group), and traffic management rental business Ramudden Global.

Caterpillar’s impact continues to grow. Nineteen of the top 100 are related to Cat in some way, and that includes companies that continue to grow rapidly, such as Alayan in southern Europe and Zeppelin Rental in central and northern Europe.

More widely, OEM-owned or related rental businesses represent almost a quarter of the top 100.
