Palfinger develops electric field sensor
02 November 2026
Palfinger is offering a new electric field sensors that can be retrofitted to its truck mounted platforms.
The system helps operators detect electrical fields in their surroundings at an early stage, supporting safer working near overhead power lines.

“An additional warning signal can be particularly important when working on roads, carrying out tree care operations or operating on construction sites with restricted visibility,” said the company.
The Electric field sensors work by measuring the electrical field strength around the platform basket. This is particularly relevant for companies whose employees regularly work near overhead power lines, including utility companies, tree care specialists, construction companies, local authorities and aerial platform rental companies.
The system consists of four electric field sensors mounted on the basket, a central control unit and a display unit:
- The four sensors detect electrical field strengths and transmit signals to the central control unit.
- The central processing unit (CPU) processes the sensor signals and compares them with a configured warning threshold.
- If the threshold is exceeded, the display unit issues audible and visual warnings.
While the electric field sensors provide additional awareness of potential hazards in the working environment, said the company, they do not replace risk assessments, operator training, prescribed safety distances or other operational safety measures.

Installation, operator instruction and annual inspections are carried out according to standardised procedures at Palfinger branches.
They are installed in positions that do not restrict operation or freedom of movement. Following installation, the system’s functionality and electrical safety are checked, with an annual inspection of the devise also offered.
“This provides customers not only with a retrofit solution for existing aerial work platforms, but also with a clearly defined service process for regular inspection and documentation of the system, said the company. Stefan Terkl, Head of Sales Platforms at Palfinger added, “With the retrofit solution for electric field sensors, we are responding to a specific customer request to support safe working during operations near overhead power lines.”
