Speedy launches biodiversity impact score for equipment

Speedy Hire in the UK has launched a Biodiversity Impact Score service for customers, letting them to see the impact on nature of the equipment they rent and highlighting actions to reduce it, including recomended ‘ecoproduct’ alternatives.

A biodiversity footprint measures how human actions impact on nature, considering factors such as land use, water consumption and resource extraction. The new service will translate these impacts into a single number – the Biodiversity Impact Score.

The service has been developed with the Nature Services team from engineering consultant Mott MacDonald.

Speedy said the Impact Score links equipment carbon emissions to impacts on nature, bringing previously inaccessible nature data directly to customers. The score is integrated into the myspeedy app, enabling users to see the equipment they have hired, the carbon impact, and the implications for nature.

Speedy Hire’s ‘Biodiversity Impact Score’ will tell customers the impact their rented equipment is having on nature.

The company will combine data on carbon emissions and the nature impact to recommend ‘ecoproduct’ alternatives to customers.

It said this approach is a key component of its ‘Decade to Deliver’ strategy, which includes the aim that 70% of its core fleet to be ecoproducts by 2027, thereby reducing Scope 3 emissions (from machines rented to customers).

The launch of the reporting service follows Speedy Hire’s first submission to the voluntary Taskforce for Nature related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), where the company publicly disclosed its nature related risks and opportunities.
