The redevelopment of Reading Station involved the installation of a new roof

Eurosafe Solutions has been supplying fall protection products and training for workers on the UK£850 million (US$1.4 billion) redevelopment of Reading Station in the UK.

The firm worked with specialist contractor Lakesmere to design, supply and install the fall protection, access and safety equipment to enable workers to carry out the re-roofing of the station.

The fall protection systems were also required to support contractors who were building a passenger walkway above the platforms. The station had to remain operational while the work was carried out, so safety was paramount.

Fall protection systems were installed above fall hazard zones, which included gaps between the pre-made cassettes on the roof. The type of cassette installation meant that it was not possible to install a guardrail, so Eurosafe Solutions installed horizontal Kalsafe Latchway mansafe systems on the near flat top and bottom roofs.

The company’s Industrial Roped Access Team (IRAT) also installed fall protection netting to the two main voids and set up an abseil system at the head of the slope. A Latchway Bridge Latch system was also fitted.

John Boyle, director of Eurosafe Solutions, said: “This was an important contract, which ensured that personnel working on the refurbishment of the station were offered maximum protection from falls. We are pleased to report that there were no incidents during the construction of the site and the fall protection systems will further enhance safety for those carrying out maintenance work in the future.”
